Part I: What if God is not what we think it is?

When I decide to write about something, the questioning, analyzing, and making sense of that 'something' usually start a couple of months before. By the time I have finally grabbed my laptop to sit down and write, I have been through a complex process of seeking answers and gaining insights from a bird's-eye-view. In my journey of exploring spiritual answers to 'what is God and what are we doing here?', I was at a certain point of my journey where I found myself asking, "well, why bother? Why bother creating all us messy humans with our insecurities, fears, greed, desires, ambition, lacks, grief, love, lust, compassion, and beauty?" Religion says to worship one God and pass the test of life to either go to heaven or hell. Spirituality says to learn our lessons of unconditional love, or be the best version of ourselves that will serve a soul mission to raise the vibration of this earth and turn it into a heaven. My response to either of the views, "I understand, but still, why bother?"

Before I spill what I have discovered let me tell you about a recently binge-watched period drama on Netflix, Medici (2016-2019). I always indulge myself into period dramas that portray politics, power and war, and when it is historically based well you might not find my presence in reality until I am done indulging. Medici is a true masterpiece, specially the last two seasons about the Lorenzo de' Medici, the Magnificent, who had a charm for words, a complexly magnificent mind for politics, and like his grandfather Cosimo de' Medici he was a patron of arts and philosophy. He had a vision for Florence, to make the city the centre of Europe, and with time his goal changed from making peace between the cities in Italy, making Florence a true republic through constitutional method, to keeping the Medici family as the ruler of Florence. TV adaptation will always differ from the true history in insignificant ways, so it is wise not to take TV screen as accurate representation of the history. However, I am interested in the TV series for what I am about to dissect in this particular blog post.

Medici family always had enemies as Cosimo anticipated, a banker family, with such influence and power in politics to rule Florence, thinking they would have been loved by all would be an utter fantasy. Politics is not a transparent game, however, what I admired about both Cosimo and his grandson Lorenzo de' Medici is that they had an intention to do good through good, by avoiding war and blood spill. Lorenzo even stood against the Pope Sixtus IV for a peace treaty that would end wars among the cities. As the events unfolded, Lorenzo was successful eventually, but it cost him his brother, Giuliano de' Medici's life by the Pazzi conspiracy. This was a tower moment for Lorenzo, after such loss he was a changed man that even the heartless Riario admitted he couldn't defeat him. The assassination took place in the cathedral during Easter mass. Given it was in the house of God, to Lorenzo God did nothing to save his brother, thus, the changed Lorenzo de' Medici had lost his faith in God. At the end, a Dominican monk Girolamo Savonarola became a force against Lorenzo, as he preached about equality before God, and how Lorenzo has lost his way, therefore shall repent his sins. The monk went to the extent to destroy all the establishment of reniassance art, science and literature after the death of Lorenzo, as to him they were ungodly establishment of Lorenzo's lost ways. Well, the monk also met his doom six years later, not an honourable death, it seems God didn't wish that for him. Whereas, Lorenzo's death was peaceful surrounding his families.

If you look up the actual history, the significant events in the Medici TV series are true (except Lorenzo was not present during his wife's death). Therefore, if you consider any other historical events and the individuals like Lorenzo or Pope Sixtus IV, what do you think they were doing? Were they making their way to heaven or hell? Were they making this world a living heaven? Or, were they just living for themselves? The truth is everyone had their own agenda and the answer is not that simple. Now lets ask few more questions, shall we? Why did God let an assassination take place in his house? Why did not God save Giuliano? Was God not aware of Lorenzo's cold transformation? Was it a test for Lorenzo? Or, Lorenzo's cold transformation was meant to happen for him to be able to do what he did afterwards?

Let's get out of Medici and approach the questions in more general sense. Why do good things happen to good people? Why do good things happen to bad people? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do bad things happen to bad people? The first and last questions we all might not even care to answer, and just say "Hey! It's Karma B!!" But is it? Do you really think it's that simple as going to hell or heaven? Do you think the grand plan is to raise earth's vibration? Do you really believe the power of freewill is unlimited, not just limited to cause and effect of chains of events that spread into multiple possibilities aka timelines? Do you really think we hold the power to write our own future, and if not it is already written? If religion is the way to God, then why does it divide us? If everyone is equal in the eyes of God then why can't we hold acceptance in our hearts? If spirituality is the way to enlightenment, then why there is a basic need to have a safe roof on your head? How would one heal oneself to enlightenment if one doesn't even have a safe place to sleep at night? Is it really possible to fathom the 'Grand Plan' of the God, the Universe, the Source? If so, then what is it?
